The Almighty Smiter?

Sometimes it’s easy for us to think like this…

Every now and then I feel like I could be Jim Carrey in this scene.  Yelling at God for not doing as I expect and challenging him to do as I say...or else!

Then I have to remind myself of a simple truth that I think many of us forget all too often…

“If God is for us, who can be against us?  He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?”–Romans 8: 31-32

God is FOR us–not AGAINST us!  What an amazing and wonderful truth that we can all take comfort in!

God isn’t sitting up in Heaven just waiting to pounce on you with a lightning bolt of fury and a loud proclamation of “got ya!” when you make a mistake.

Rather, God is up in Heaven, pulling for you, cheering for you, and wanting you to trust Him to guide you where you’re supposed to go.

For me, it’s when things aren’t going my way I feel like God is punishing me or simply trying to make me miserable just because He can.  These thoughts are lies from the evil one of course, and aren’t the truth of Scripture.  For God tells us,

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'”–Jeremiah 29:11

God’s plans for us may not always be what we think we want at the time, but He has our best interests at heart ALL THE TIME.  I need to remind myself of this truth more often.  For when God’s plans don’t line up with my plans, I often take my gloves off ready to take on the “almighty smiter!”

God doesn’t want to box me though.  He wants to help me, He wants to save me, and He wants to make me my best.

Oh Lord, help me trust You more, for Your plans are greater than my plans–even when it doesn’t feel like they are.
